Woman dragged up six floors by faulty elevator, dies

In a tragic incident, a 70-year-old woman lost her life after being caught in a faulty elevator of her residential apartment in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave. She was dragged up six floors.

Satya Gupta, a resident of Abhimanyu apartments went out for walk on Thursday morning. When she returned to the apartment around 10:30 a.m., she pressed the key to the elevator, which stopped some inches above the base of the shaft.

As she was about to enter the elevator, another resident pressed the key to the lift from the sixth floor. As a result, the doors of the lift closed prematurely, leaving the woman’s leg stuck in between.

She was then dragged up till sixth floor. In the process, she received grievous injuries to her head and neck.

She was finally rescued on the sixth floor and raced to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

A senior police official said the exact cause of her death can be ascertained only after the post-mortem, but she seems to have died of heart attack.

The victim’s family has told the police that the lift was not repaired despite several complaints by the residents.

The police are looking into the aspect of negligence too.
