A 55-year-old woman was killed and two of her neighbours sustained injuries when they were hit by a vehicle in central Delhi’s Desh Bandhu Gupta Road on Tuesday evening. Accused, a doctor, has been arrested, the police said.
The deceased has been identified as Shanno Devi and the injured have been identified as Kripali Devi (60) and Geeta (40). All of them, the police said, reside in Kishanganj and work in Sadar Bazar.
The accused, identified as Ambuj Garg (47), who practises in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital was arrested said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M.S. Randhawa. The doctor who resides in the premises of St. Stephens Hospital, was subsequently released on bail.

Ms. Geeta told the police that the three of them were crossing the Rani Jhansi Road around 8 p.m. when a car coming from the Idgah direction hit them. “We were going home after the day’s work. When the car hit us, Shanno Devi fell unconscious on the road and the two of us got injured, but we were conscious,” she said. Locals rushed the three of them to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital where Shanno was declared brought dead. The two injured were discharged after treatment.
The police said that the doctor was caught by a PCR van about a km away from the spot. “He fled the spot because he feared being thrashed by them. A few locals also chased him after which he slowed down the vehicle. As the PCR call was already made, the van in the area stopped him and he was arrested,” said a senior officer adding that the doctor was on his way home from work.
Mr. Randhawa said that a case under Section 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life), and 304A (causing death by negligence) has been registered at DBG Road Police Station and the vehicle has been seized.
