While at DU, learn an east Asian language

Chinese, Japanese, Korean and many more languages on offer

The Department of East Asian Studies of Delhi University (DU) is offering a host of alternative courses for candidates applying for undergraduate programmes.

The courses include part-time certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages.

The courses will be conducted through eight colleges of DU.

“The intensive diploma can be pursued by aspirants along with their B.A. degree. Students enrolled in the School of Open Learning and the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board can also apply. Students who complete this level during the three years in college can directly apply for the one-year P.G. Intensive Advanced Diploma in our department,” said Professor Anita Sharma, who heads the department.

The application process for direct admissions to the Post-Graduate level will commence from June 12 and the entrance exam will be held on July 6.

M.A. degrees on offer

The department is also offering M.A. in East Asian Studies, M.A. in Japanese Studies and Ph.D. in East Asian Studies. Admissions to all these programmes will be based on an entrance exam held by the department.

Students who graduate from this department find placements with leading think-tanks as well as corporate houses.

“Learning a foreign language is always an added advantage and the knowledge of an oriental language increases your job prospects. There are a lot of job opportunities in corporations as well as government departments. I have worked in the Cabinet Secretariat where I had to help with translations,” said Surinder Kumar, who has completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Chinese.

“I completed the P.G. Intensive Advanced Diploma in Korean and immediately got placed with Samsung as a Korean language expert,” said Anmol Sabharwal, another graduate.
