Water situation would be better this summer: CM

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has expressed hope that the water situation in the Capital would improve during the upcoming summer months following Delhi High Court’s direction for installation of ultra-sonic flow meters in the Munak Canal. The measurement will ensure that Haryana releases Delhi’s share of water.

Mr. Kejriwal said on Twitter that he hoped that water situation would be better this summer.

“Congrats Delhiites...Delhi High Court directs Haryana to release Delhi’s share of water,” he tweeted on Friday.

Amid conflicting claims over the amount of water being released by Haryana to Delhi, a Division Bench of the High Court ordered over the weekend the scientific measurement at several check points in the Munak Canal.

The ultra-sonic flow meters will monitor if 719 cusecs of water per day – the amount of water pledged by Haryana – is being released to the Capital through the 102-km-long Munak Canal. The Bench said Haryana appeared to be “trying to resile or renege” from the arrangement made by the Court as the State finds it inconvenient.

The Court took exception to a claim made by the Haryana Government that the Delhi Jal Board was wasting 400 cusecs of water every day that could have been used as drinking water for citizens.
