While Delhiites were busy enjoying Thursday’s rain, residents of a village near Najafgarh on the outskirts of Delhi were involved in a rescue mission. The villagers had to cut through tree branches in the pouring rain in an attempt to save lives.
The lives saved were of cattle egrets chicks that were living in multiple nests on the tree. When the tree fell, these fragile creatures got trapped and were staring death in the face. The villagers rescued and moved them to a dry and warm spot. Sadly, only 60 birds survived.
The villagers then called JustDial and got the number of a bird rehabilitation centre in the area. Nadeem, who runs the centre, responded to the call and transported the birds to his hospital.

The surviving chicks are eating well, he added.
“The villagers who contacted me are the real heroes. Many people would have just walked past the trapped birds,” says Nadeem. Two adult egrets were killed when the tree fell.
