Family of man whom the police had gone to arrest is behind the attack: officials

The video of an incident wherein a constable was attacked with chilli powder by the family of an externee when the police had gone to apprehend him in Shahdara’s Vivek Vihar on August 9, has gone viral on social media.

In the video, an officer can be seen confining a man to a cot with another officer holding a pistol in his hand trying to control a few people charging at him.

A senior police officer said that on August 9, the police received information that a man identified as Sajan Rahi, an externee and bad character of Vivek Vihar, was at his residence. The officer added that as per rules, Sajan was not supposed to stay in Delhi.

“Constable Pradeep, along with another officer went to his residence and when they apprehended him, his family members, including his brother Deepak Rahi resisted and interrupted the officers. Deepak threw chilli powder in Mr. Pradeep’s eyes,” the officer said, adding that Deepak has a case under Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act registered against him and is out on parole.

Fired in the air

The officer opened fire in the air to save himself and managed to arrest Sajan who has several robbery and snatching cases registered against him.

The police said that a case under Section 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged in connection with the incident and further probe is under way.
