The High Court here on Monday gave Delhi University time till November 20 to verify the authenticity of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president Ankiv Baisoya’s bachelors degree from a university in Tamil Nadu.
Justice C. Hari Shankar granted more time to DU to carry out the verification on the university’s request.
The court had on October 30 granted DU time till Monday to carry out the verification and inform it, as the two-month period within which re-election can be held will expire on November 13.

The direction had come on National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) leader Sunny Chillar’s plea seeking setting aside of Mr. Baisoya’s election.
News reports had quoted the Registrar of Thiruvalluvar University “unambiguously and unequivocally” declaring Mr. Baisoya’s certificate as “fake and forged”, Mr. Chillar had alleged .

He had also claimed that DU was “deliberately delaying” verification to benefit the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) since fresh polls cannot be held for the post of DUSU president in case Mr. Baisoya’s election is set aside over the fake degree issue after expiry of the the two-month period.
Lyngdoh guidelines
According to the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines on elections, Mr. Chillar’s plea said, fresh elections will be held if a post falls vacant within two months of declaration of results. In this case, the two-month period will expire on Tuesday.
Mr. Chillar had contended that if Mr. Baisoya was removed after expiry of the two-month period, the post of DUSU president will be taken over by its vice-president, who is also a member of ABVP.
In his plea, filed through advocates V. Elanchezhiyan and Rashid N. Azam, the NSUI leader has sought time-bound enquiry into allegations that Mr. Baisoya gained admission in M.A. Buddhist Studies in DU on the basis of a fake degree.
Mr. Chillar had lost to Mr. Baisoya in the race for the post of Delhi University Students’ Union president.
