In a shocking incident of protectors turning predators, two Delhi Police constables allegedly attempted to rape a minor girl at an official accommodation in Mukherjee Nagar here on Saturday evening. While the policemen have been arrested and dismissed from service, the police plan to file a charge sheet in the case within a week.

Constables Amit Tomar and Gurjinder Singh were posted with the IIIrd Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police. In a candid admission of the crime committed by the duo, the force on Sunday described theirs as an unpardonable act.

Police probe revealed that the 17-year-old victim, who is from a poor economic background, was loitering in the Vikaspuri police lines along with some friends when Constables Tomar spotted her on Saturday. He struck a conversation with them and then on the pretext of helping them monetarily, he took the girls to the official residence of Constable Singh at Kingsway Camp in his vehicle.

Constable Singh was already in his house when they reached there. Following a brief conversation, they took the victim to another room where they attempted to force themselves on her. The girl offered resistance and raised an alarm. Hearing her screams, her friends also started shouting for help,” said a senior police officer.

A neighbour heard the commotion. Suspecting that something was amiss, he alerted the Police Control Room. Subsequently a team reached the spot and rescued the girls from the clutches of the two constables.

“On the basis of the victim’s statement, she was medically examined at Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital. During the proceedings, according to the standard operating procedure, a representative of non-government organisation Sampoorna was also roped in for assistance. A case was then registered at the Mukherjee Nagar police station and the constables were arrested,” said the officer. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement.

Taking the matter seriously, a special investigation team under the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Pramod Kushwaha has been constituted to probe the allegations.

“All steps are being taken to ensure that the charge sheet in the case is filed within a week. A quick and strong disciplinary action has been taken against the policemen to send across a strong message in the force that there is a zero tolerance against any such act,” said the officer.
