October 07, 2011 11:45 am | Updated 11:45 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Two men allegedly running a betting racket on the Champions League T20 cricket matches have been arrested at Moti Nagar in West Delhi. The police claim to have seized a laptop, mobile phones and other articles from them.

The accused have been identified as Pankaj Vij (38) and Ved Prakash (43). According to the police, the two had accepted bets worth Rs.5 lakh on the cricket match between Somerset and Warriors teams when they were arrested by a team led by Inspector Raj Kumar on Wednesday.

During interrogation, Pankaj purportedly disclosed that he earlier ran a telephone booth. Not satisfied with the income, he allegedly entered into betting business. Ved Prakash, who earlier owned 200 cycle-rickshaws, also joined him after he suffered financial losses. The accused were running the racket for the past two years. The police suspect that the betting rates against which they had been accepting the stakes were being sent from Dubai via Mumbai.
