Two alleged members of a gang from the Mewat region of Haryana have been arrested in South Delhi. The police claim to have seized a firearm and impounded a car used in the crimes by them.
The accused have been identified as Shahabuddin (30) and Zafruddin (20). According to the police, they were involved in a Vasant Kunj (North) robbery in September and theft of cows from the same area about a fortnight ago.
The gang had targeted one Mahender Singh, driver of a trailer truck near Nangal Devat village in Vasant Kunj. He was on his way to Chhatarpur when some persons in a mini-truck sought his help in repairing their vehicle. As he stopped, three persons overpowered him, robbed him of Rs.25,000 in cash and drove away. “The accused were also involved in the theft of two cows in the same area,” said a police officer, adding that the accused were arrested on Thursday.

During interrogation, they purportedly confessed to their involvement in several cases of dacoity, attempted murder and encounter with the police. “They are also involved in the theft of several tractors in neighbouring Gurgaon. The stolen vehicles were sold to one Aslam, a resident of Mewat.’’
The police said the gang primarily stole cattle from the outskirts of the city. However, lately the criminals had started committing late night robberies in and around the Capital. “They intercept vehicles and rob the occupants, particularly women, of cash and other valuables. They carry weapons and commit robberies in large groups,” said the officer.
