Tribunal seeks reply on Gurgaon landfill ‘polluting’ groundwater

September 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:46 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Groundwater in south Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad risks contamination by decaying municipal waste being stashed at a landfill site in the Aravalli hill area of Gurgaon.

A petition filed before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) by Gurgaon residents Vivek Kamboj and Amit Chaudhery on Tuesday claimed that the Bandhwari waste treatment plant and landfill site in Aravalli hill area in Gurgaon was contaminating water in the area. The petitioners have asked for the landfill site and treatment plant to be relocated.

The NGT, meanwhile, has sought a response from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Delhi and Haryana governments, and the Central Pollution Control Board.

According to the petition, municipal corporations of Gurgaon and Faridabad were disposing of waste in the Aravalli hill forest. This waste was releasing leachate (a liquid that drains from a landfill), which was polluting ground water.

The petition claims that groundwater of south Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad risked being polluted by a toxic lake of untreated municipal waste in the Aravalli forests, formed by leaking of muck from the Bandhwari plant.
