To stop L-G’s ‘interference’, AAP threatens to open anti-graft units

Threatening to open several anti-corruption units in Delhi, probably each in every ward, leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday said that they would be left with no option if the Centre and the Lieutenant Governor didn’t stop ‘interfering’ in their work.

At a press conference, they said that not a single case had been registered after the officer took over and the party would form squads to ‘expose’ corruption in the Capital.

AAP founder member Kumar Vishwas alleged that the position of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) was getting ‘compromised’ under the current officer.

“We came to power on the plank of corruption. Since the formation of the AAP government, around 150 FIRs have been registered and dozens of officers suspended. However, ever since the ACB started looking into the 2002 CNG fitness case and the name of L-G cropped up, he appointed Mukesh Kumar Meena as the chief. Credentials of Mr. Meena are doubtful as he has allegations against him,” he said.

Mr. Vishwas said many small anti-corruption units would be opened in the city. “Every unit will be strengthened at par with the existing ACB,” he said. The statement came in the wake of the recent tussle between the ACB chiefs, one appointed by the L-G and other by the AAP government.

Accusing the Centre, AAP leaders said that through the L-G, it is hampering their functioning. He said such units would be controlled by party volunteers if the Central government and the L-G tried to slow down their anti-corruption movement.

“We have been fighting corruption all along and now the NDA government isn’t letting us do good work after the BJP was decimated in the Delhi elections. Corruption is intolerable and we are trying our best to weed it out. But, the Centre isn’t letting us deliver on our promises,” said party leader Dilip Pandey.

Meanwhile, the party has moved the High Court over the appointment of Mr. Meena as the ACB chief because the Delhi government had already appointed S S Yadav.
