Inmates of Tihar jail on Monday chipped in with Rs. 10 lakh towards aid for the victims of the Uttarakhand floods.

The most generous donors were inmates of jail no. 2 — where those serving life sentences are lodged — who pooled an amount of Rs. 3.5 lakh, Tihar Law Officer Sunil Gupta said. Director General of Prisons Vimla Mehra handed over a cheque for Rs. 10 lakh to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The Chief Minister lauded the prisoners’ gesture.

Mr. Gupta said the inmates had made the contribution from what they earned by working in various projects of the jail.
