Allow others from weaker sections to benefit: Sonam Wangchuk

Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal (second from right) and education reformist Sonam Wangchuk (second from left) at the convocation ceremony of Ambedkar University Delhi on Friday.

Innovator and education reformist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday said that people who have benefitted from reservation or quota in education should voluntarily give up their status as they should consider themselves “equal”.

He said this will allow other people from the weaker sections to benefit from the reservation system and will reach the people who are weaker than them.

Mr. Wangchuk said this while delivering the sixth convocation at the Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) here.

‘Take a gap year’

“Once someone has become equal by benefits of affirmative action, they should volunteer to give up their quota,” he said, adding that the nation is like a family in which “the stronger should take care of the weaker”.

He told graduating students that they should consider taking a gap year to explore their interests.

Contribution to society

The education reformist added that corporates should encourage more interns and universities should consider giving extra points to students who take a gap year to explore opportunities or travel because real learning often takes place outside the classroom.

Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal, who was present at the convocation as the Chancellor, agreed with Mr. Wangchuk and urged students to travel and take time off to explore how they can contribute to society.

During the convocation, 568 students who completed the prescribed requirements during the academic year 2016-17 were awarded Ph.D, M.Phil, MBA, MA and BA (Hons.) degrees.
