When the family of head constable Rajesh Kumar reached Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, they were allegedly told by the police that he had committed suicide.
Admitting that “initial inputs pointed towards suicide”, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rishi Pal said, “However, the family members alleged he was murdered. Keeping their inputs in mind, a case of murder was registered.”
Nitin, 20, the victim’s son, said they refused to believe that his father had committed suicide because he was a happy man.

“A woman officer at the hospital told me that he had an argument with three colleagues, after which the gunshot was heard. When we went to meet a senior officer, he said it was a suicide. The woman officer too retracted her statement on Thursday morning,” he alleged.
The family said Kumar was very happy when he left home on Wednesday evening.
“My brother took the National Defence Academy exam three days ago and it went very well. I am preparing for the Staff Selection Commission exam. Papa told me he would buy me anything I wanted if I cleared the exam,” he said.

Bloodstains
Dissatisfied with what they had allegedly been told, the family went to examine the crime spot. Mr. Nitin said there were bloodstains spread over a few metres, almost as if his father had run after being shot at.
“We captured a video and showed it to senior officers. It was only after that they registered the murder case,” he said.
