Dumped vehicles after running out of fuel; detained during checking

Two juveniles have been detained for allegedly stealing two-wheelers to go on joyrides around the city, the police said on Monday.

They would dump the vehicle after it ran out of fuel, they said.

On April 13, the staff of Paharganj police station had called for vehicle checking drive in the area. A policeman on duty found two teenagers, wearing school uniforms, riding a scooty without helmets.

The vehicle driver and pillion rider got into argument with the policeman. At this, another policeman came to the checkpoint and started questioning the juveniles.

“The teenagers were unable to produce documents for the scooty. During questioning, they broke down and confessed to stealing the scooty from Paharganj,” said an officer.

One of them is a Class VIII student while the other is in Class IX in different schools, the officer said, adding, “They are neighbours and very fond of two-wheelers. They often bunked school to go on joyrides after stealing the vehicles.”

During questioning, they confessed to stealing over 30 two-wheelers in the past five months. They used to steal the vehicles from various localities of central Delhi with the help of a master key.

“We have recovered 11 two-wheelers from various locations in the city where they dumped the vehicles. Other vehicles might have been taken away by other persons. We are tracking down the missing vehicles,” said another officer.

During investigation, the presence of juveniles was corroborated with the footage of CCTV cameras at different places in Paharganj.

“The juveniles are not part of any vehicle stealing gang. They used to do it for a joyride and since they had no money to refuel the vehicle, they would abandon them,” added the officer.
