Suspected case of road rage; accused released on bail

An 18-year-old student was allegedly beaten by two persons in north-west Delhi’s Bharat Nagar on May 18 in a case of road rage, the police said on Wednesday. The two accused, who were arrested, have been released on bail.

Victim Harshit is a resident of Krishna Enclave, while accused Khem Singh and his relative Vishal live in Ravidas Gali in Sawan Park.

Space crunch

Recalling the incident, Harshit said he was on his scooty at the street outside the accused’s residence around 8 p.m. and that the way was blocked by two cars facing each other.

“A woman was trying to park her vehicle. The car facing hers wanted to reverse to make space for her to park. Since I was behind the other car, I moved my scooty to the side. However, the woman shouted at me saying where was I trying to go,” Harshit said in his complaint.

Harshit told her that he was trying to make space for the other car to reverse. On hearing the student’s reply, the woman’s husband Khem Singh shouted at Harshit and asked him to talk properly.

“I asked him what was wrong with the way I had spoken. Instead of responding, he slapped me. His relative [Mr. Vishal] arrived at the spot. Both of them charged towards me and pushed me off the scooty. Then, they started punching me,” the student said.

Harshit alleged they tried to choke him and hit him with an iron rod. A few neighbours came to the student’s rescue.

Taken to hospital

He managed to leave the spot and reach a medical store. He informed his maternal uncle about the incident. The uncle reached the medical store and called the police. The police took Harshit, who was bleeding profusely from the nose and mouth, to a hospital. He was treated and later discharged.

DCP (North-West) Aslam Khan said a case under Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC was registered.
