Govt broadens scope of education loan guarantee scheme

Delhiites who want to study in any government institute, college or university outside the Capital will be able to apply for the Delhi government’s education loan guarantee scheme, with the Cabinet approving the extension of the existing scheme on Tuesday.

₹10 lakh guarantee

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the portfolios of education and finance, said that the Cabinet had given its nod for the extension of the scheme that currently only covers higher education within Delhi. The ₹10 lakh education loan guarantee under the Higher Education and Skill Development Guarantee Scheme would be available for Delhi students wanting to pursue college education in any part of the country.

“For instance, if a student wants to study in IIT or IIM in any part of the country, the loan will now be available to them also,” said Mr. Sisodia.

While interacting on May 23 with students of Delhi government schools who had cracked the IIT-JEE (mains) examination, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced that the scheme would be extended to cover colleges outside the Capital.

Mr. Sisodia said the scheme encountered some problems last year, leading to a delay. The scheme helps meritorious students get bank loans, with the government taking care of the guarantee.
