Student commits suicide

May 22, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 12, 2016 07:46 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

A 17-year-old boy used his school belt to hang himself after allegedly being disappointed with his Class XII marks.

He had scored a little over 60 per cent and felt that was not enough to qualify for an MBBS course at Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical College, his parents told the police.

The boy was already taking coaching for medical exams and had hoped to become a doctor, added the police. They are yet to investigate if he was being pressurised by his parents to score high marks. The deceased had returned from school after collecting his marks and was visibly disappointed as he expected to score over 80 per cent, the police said quoting the parents.

His father, a grocery shop owner, told police that he consoled his son and told him to take time to compose himself. Instead, he locked himself in his room in South-West Delhi’s Naraina. When the mother called him for lunch around 1 p.m., she found the door locked and no response from inside. The family broke into the room to find him hanging from the ceiling fan.

An only child, he did not leave any suicide note.
