A 25-year-old auto-rickshaw driver set himself afire inside the premises of Sadar Ballabgarh Police Station around noon on Thursday, after a woman lodged a complaint accusing him of stalking her.

Rohit Yadav, a resident of Navlu Colony in Ballabgarh, set himself afire inside the police station after a woman police officer deployed at the Women Cell called him up for investigation into a complaint against him.

City Ballabgarh Police Station SHO, Inspector Mahesh Kumar, said that Rohit reached the police station in a two-wheeler carrying an inflammable liquid in a bottle and doused himself with it. “He then set himself afire at the entrance of the police station and rushed inside engulfed in flames. The policemen doused the flames and took him to civil hospital. He was diagnosed with 60 % burns and referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi,” said Mr. Kumar. A case has been registered against Rohit on charges of attempt to commit suicide under the Indian Penal Code

Women Police Station SHO, Inspector Sushila Devi, said that a 20-year-old woman working in a factory had come to the Women Cell inside the Sadar Ballabgarh Police Station on Thursday morning and lodged a complaint against Rohit for allegedly pressuring her for marriage and stalking her. The woman, in her compliant, also him of forcing her to accompany him on June 3, and threatened her with dire consequences if she refused.

‘In a relationship’

Rohit, however, told reporters at the hospital that he was in relationship with the girl for the past six years and her parents had forced her to lodge a complaint against him. He said he was hurt by the complaint filed by the woman and thus set himself afire.
