A head constable on duty at a police barricade suffered serious injuries after a speeding two-wheeler hit him in Geeta Colony, Shahdara, on Sunday.
The incident happened around 1.30 a.m. when 20-year-old Taufeeq, with two pillion riders, was out on a joyride on his scooty. At a police check point near the cremation ground in Geeta Colony, an Assistant Sub-Inspector signalled the scooty to stop as the friends were triple riding and Taufeeq was not wearing a helmet, said the police.
Taufeeq, however, continued to drive on. Head constable Pramod then stepped in and signalled the scooty to stop but the youth abused him and threatened to drive over him if he dared to stop them, said the police, adding that Mr. Pramod stood his ground. Taufeeq then hit Pramod.

“The scooty driver was speeding. Despite the warning, he deliberately hit the head constable. The police staff at the barricade managed to catch the driver when he tried to escape after falling,” said ADCP-II (Shahdara) Rajeev Kumar.
While Taufeeq was arrested on the spot, the two pillion riders managed to escape.
“Mr. Pramod suffered major injuries to the face, chest and hands. He has been admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital. The scooty driver was arrested at the spot while the two pillion riders managed to flee. They have been identified and will be arrested soon,” said Mr. Kumar.

‘Driver was not drunk’
“The driver was not under influence of alcohol. He claimed that he along with his friends were on a joyride and returning to his house in Jama Masjid. The scooty driver and the two pillion riders have been booked under IPC Sections 186 [obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions], 308 [attempt to commit culpable homicide] and 353 [assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty],” the officer said.
