Hits cow before victims; driver flees from overturned car

The incident happened in north Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi on Thursday morning.

A rickshaw puller was killed and a pedestrian injured after a speeding car hit a cow and the two victims before ramming a tree and coming to a halt in north Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi on Thursday morning. Locals told police that the driver managed to exit the overturned vehicle and escape.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Jasmeet Singh, who has currently assumed charge of North district, said the deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Riyasat, who belonged to Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, and the injured pedestrian as Malka Ganj resident Rani (58).

Riyasat is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

The police said the vehicle first hit a cow and then Rani, who was walking along the road.

“The car reached a roundabout and hit Riyasat, who was standing nearby. The vehicle then rammed a tree and overturned next to a wall,” said a senior police officer.

Riyasat and Rani were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the rickshaw puller succumbed to injuries. The woman has sustained severe injuries but is out of danger, the police said.

Stating that the Wazirpur-based car owner has been identified, Mr. Singh said a case under Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.

“It is yet to determine if the owner was driving the car or not. Teams have been formed to identify and nab the absconding accused,” the officer said.

Locals claimed the driver was drunk at the time of the incident, but the police are probing whether the accident happened because of the cow.

A drunk 22-year-old woman had on November 9 hit an SUV, killing a 38-year-old woman and injuring her 13-year-old daughter.

On November 14, a retired DU professor rammed an e-rickshaw and a few other vehicles. A teenager died and eight persons were injured in the accident.
