Several shops and godowns were gutted in North Delhi’s Sadar Bazar when a major fire broke out on Monday. Goods worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed in the blaze.
No casualties were, however, reported in the accident, which took place at Rui Mandi, a busy hub of shops dealing in hosiery, plastic goods and imitation jewellery.
The place houses nearly 1,000 shops, said a shopkeeper, adding that only a few were engulfed by the fire.

According to the Delhi Fire Services, the fire broke out around 5-45 p.m. Recounting his experience, Pawan Gupta, the owner of shop Maya and Sons said he was informed about the fire by fellow shopkeepers and quickly rushed out of his shop.
“We noticed the smoke and soon saw huge flames erupting from some of the shops. One of us then informed the fire control room and fire tenders were sent to the area,” said Mr. Gupta. Nearly two dozen fire tenders were pressed into service. The fire fighting exercise was on till late evening and it was contained by 8-30 p.m. The cause of the fire is not known.
