Several employees lose money, complain of ATM card fraud

Formal complaint made in Gurugram; bank promises probe

Several employees of different companies at Unitech Cyber Park in Sector 39 here have allegedly been duped of thousands of rupees each over the past few days after they used the HDFC Bank’s ATM on the premises.

A formal complaint has also been made at Sadar police station in this regard but no first information report (FIR) has been registered so far.

Kapil, a designer by profession, alleged in a series of tweets that many people employed with different companies at Unitech Cyber Park here were duped of ₹40,000-₹50,000 each over the past couple of days.

He claimed that all the victims had swiped their debit cards at the HDFC Bank ATM at Unitech Cyber Park recently. Mr. Kapil further said that the hackers had selected salary days to withdraw the money.

Claiming to be a victim himself, Mr. Kapil tweeted: “Money from [my] account was withdrawn at 1.30 AM last night from a Delhi ATM when I was sleeping at my home. Off-course debit card was with me and this was the situation with every victim mentioned above. No one shared PIN with anyone on phone. There was chaos at HDFC Cyber Park branch today [on Friday]. People were shouting at the branch manager and other employees for this fraud [sic].”

Responding to tweets alleging fraud, head of corporate communication at HDFC Bank Neeraj Jha tweeted: “An incident involving our ATM in Gurugram has come to our notice. While a police complaint is being filed, the matter will be investigated to get to the bottom of this. We would like to assure all customers that there will be no financial loss to them. Deeply regret the inconvenience.”

Several others took to Twitter claiming that they had also been duped of different amounts, from several thousands to a few lakhs.

Sub-Inspector Krishan Kumar, who is posted at Sadar police station, said he had received several complaints in connection with the issue over the past few days and the complaint was marked to the banks concerned.

“Those duped are customers of private banks, including HDFC Bank,” said Mr. Kumar.
