Safety check for PCR vans ahead of Republic Day

Entire fleet to undergo inspection, repair, refurbishment for smooth functioning

To ensure smooth functioning of its communication system during the Republic Day function, the Delhi Police have instructed all PCR vans to undergo thorough inspection and fix any technical or mechanical issue with the vehicle.

‘Look good’

As part of the special drive, the entire fleet of 800 PCR vans will undergo inspection. The vans deployed in the New Delhi area have been instructed to “look good” on January 26 as delegates representing foreign countries will visit the city.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Devendra Arya said two ‘model’ PCR vans have been put on display at New Delhi Zone PCR office since Friday and inspectors from all six zones have been asked to take a look at them and replicate the features in their vehicles .

“The special drive for PCR vans will end on Sunday. All vans will be inspected and the status of communication system, medical kit [stretcher and first-aid box], anti-riot gear and weapons will be checked. In case of any defect, the issue will be rectified immediately,” said Mr. Arya.

He added that apart from the basic features of the PCR vans, they have also instructed the inspectors to focus on vehicle maintenance and uniform of the staff deployed in the vehicles. The PCR vans have also been inspected for toolkit and a piece of cloth to clean the windshield.

“On Sunday, we gave a presentation to the PCR staff on weapon display and handling. According to the rule, a policeman should always carry the handgun in a holster. It's the most secure, fastest and comfortable way to carry a gun,” added Mr. Arya.

Extra vans deployed

A drill, involving PCR vans, to check response time and alertness of staff will also be conducted as a part of the Republic Day security arrangements.

Meanwhile, apart from existing PCR vans in the New Delhi and Central district, 131 additional vans have been deployed in these areas. “We have deployed additional 58 PCR vans in New Delhi area, 33 in Central districts and 40 vans for security of important locations and buildings,” said Mr. Arya.
