Rumours of vandalising Ambedkar statue spark tension

Allegation was made in an attempt to frame a group: police

Tension erupted after rumours of vandalising Bhim Rao Ambedkar statue in Niwari in Ghaziabad started doing the rounds on Monday.

Seniors police officers said that the initially the police were informed that there was an attempt to vandalise the Ambedkar statue.

Acting on the information, they rushed to the spot.

The incident took place in Abupur which falls under Niwari police station in Ghaziabad.

Forces from other police stations also reached the spot. The police said that there is an Ambedkar statue installed at a park in the area.

Some locals alleged that a group of boys tried to vandalise the statue, and that sparked the tension.

Old feud

In an attempt to frame one group, members of another spread the rumours, alleging that the former was trying to vandalise the statue, the police said.

The two groups, they said, had an old feud between them.

“The situation is under control now. We are keeping an eye on the area. Members of both the groups have been asked to maintain peace and harmony. If anyone is found guilty of taking the law in his hands, we will take stringent action against the person,” the officer said.
