Rs. 500 crore cheer for Delhi Police

The budget allocated for the Delhi Police in the Union Budget has gone up by more than Rs. 500 crore as compared to last year. Funds for introduction of latest technologies in policing have been doubled.

The Nirbhaya fund has also been increased.

The Delhi Police this year will get a total of Rs. 5,372.88 crore, mainly aimed at sprucing up traffic infrastructure, induction of latest technology, and capacity building of the force.

Women's safety

Keeping in mind women’s safety in the Capital, fund allocation for the Nirbhaya Fund has been increased by Rs. 40 lakh. While Rs. 3 crore was allocated to the Delhi Police from the Nirbhaya Fund for 2014-15, Rs. 3.40 crore has been set aside for 2015-16 fiscal.

In the budget presented in Parliament on Saturday by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the Delhi Police was allocated a total of Rs. 390 crore in plan head while Rs. 4979.48 crore was earmarked for non-plan expenditure.

The total amounted to Rs. 5372.88 crore.

The revised budget estimates for the Delhi Police for 2014-15 stood at Rs. 4865.30 crore.

The highlights include an allocation of Rs. 8 crore for the installation of traffic signals in the Capital this fiscal.

About Rs. 7 crore has been earmarked for “Developing Traffic and Communication Network in NCR Mega Cities and Model Traffic System” in the current budget. In 2014-15, Rs. 11.37 crore was earmarked for the same purpose.

For upgrading training facilities, Rs. 3 crore has been allocated, while Rs. 50 lakh has been allocated for induction of latest technology.

The budget also includes allocation for the scheme on back-end integration of distress signal from victims with mobile vans and control rooms which will be met from the Nirbhaya Fund.

About Rs. 95 crore has been set aside for construction of residential accommodation for the Delhi Police personnel, which is substantially higher than the revised budget allocations of Rs. 62.49 crore in 2014-15.

Similar trend has been witnessed in the fund allocated for construction of buildings for the Delhi Police.

About Rs. 246.50 crore has been allocated for this purpose in the budget for 2015-16.

The revised budget allocations in the same head stood at Rs. 152.03 crore in 2014-15.

The Delhi Police are responsible for maintaining and enforcing law and order in the NCT of Delhi. The responsibility also includes traffic management in the city.

The provision is for routine expenses as well as for various schemes to be implemented by the force.
