Rs. 50 crore earmarked for National Police Memorial

The Central Government on Saturday allocated Rs. 50 crore for the National Police Memorial under construction in Chanakyapuri. The memorial which is being constructed on a 6.3-acre plot at the northern end of Shanti Path in the heart of the diplomatic zone of the Capital, is supposed to be completed by 2016.

“I announce the construction of a befitting National Police Memorial. I propose to set aside a sum of Rs. 50 crore for this purpose in the current financial year. IB is raising its proposal for renovation of the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri at a cost of Rs. 53.94 crore through NBCC, so that the existing structures are utilised and the design conform to the DUAC norms,” Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in his budget speech.

Nation indebted

The nation is equally indebted to the officers and jawans of the police force, including the Central armed police forces, who are constantly engaging with the enemy within, and in the process sacrificing their lives in the line of duty, he added.

The memorial is being constructed using Dhaulpur stone, red sandstone, white and coloured pebbles, and stainless steel.

A line of trees will surround the memorial.

The memorial’s design is supposed to honour the various arms of the police force, from the local police to the Central paramilitary forces. At the same time, the design will allow regular additions, making it a “dynamic” memorial.
