‘Robber’ lynched in Mangolpuri

Crowd beat him to death after a woman called for help

In the second such incident reported in less than a week, a mob lynched a man at the Mangolpuri railway station early on Thursday.

Snatching bid

The man, suspected to be a robber, died in a hospital after being beaten up by a crowd that gathered following an alarm raised by a woman. In her statement, the woman said that she was standing outside the jhuggis near the railway station around 2:30 a.m., when a man on a scooty tried to snatch her mobile phone.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer Delhi) M.N. Tiwari added that when she tried to catch him, two of his associates came after her.

The trio then allegedly assaulted her. When she raised an alarm, one of them took out a knife and tried to stab her. Locals, meanwhile, gathered and caught two of them, even as the third escaped.

Two others got away

Soon after, the second robber also got away while the crowd beat up the first suspected robber. He was later identified as Ramesh. The police said that the woman had tried to save the man, but failed.

A senior police officer said a PCR call was received at 3 a.m. about locals having caught a robber. However, Ramesh was taken to the Mangolpuri police station in a PCR van before the local police arrived.

Case registered

Ramesh, a resident of Sultanpuri, was taken to the hospital. According to doctors, he had multiple bruises all over his body.

“We have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the IPC,” said Mr. Tiwari.

Sources at the hospital said that Ramesh had told police officers that he was tired and wanted to sleep.
