Regularisation of illegal colonies a distant dream

December 03, 2014 08:40 am | Updated April 07, 2016 02:31 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Even as the Bharatiya Janata Party wants to focus on regularising Delhi’s unauthorised colonies, which constitute an important vote-bank for the party, the Delhi Government’s Urban Development Department is looking towards the Union Government to take the process forward.

Officials acknowledge that stringent rules are required to clear the regularisation process, especially on an “as in where is” basis. Talking to journalists on Tuesday, Urban Development Secretary Rajendra Kumar said regularisation was a “serious issue” on which the Central government had asked various Delhi Government Departments and agencies to give their suggestions.

“The Union Urban Development Ministry had held various meetings on this issue. The guidelines have been formed by the Central government and the regulations have been laid by the Delhi Development Authority,” he said.

A delegation from the State unit of the BJP last month met Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu to recommend initiation of development work in unauthorised colonies that have been marked out for regularisation. At a meeting called by Mr. Naidu on Monday with Delhi government officials, including Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung, it was decided that agencies, including the Delhi government, DDA, the civic bodies, and the Union Urban Development Ministry would work out modalities for regularisation keeping in view provisions of relevant acts.

Sources said the topic of regularisation of unauthorised colonies was brought up during a meeting called by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh last month.
