Rapid Metro gets new trains

December 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 24, 2016 01:08 pm IST - GURGAON

: The Rapid Metro has added two more trains to extend services to Sectors 55 and 56 in South Gurgaon.

The trains have been procured from Siemens and will be similar to the ones being used in the Rapid Metro Phase-I network. The network will have a total of seven trains running on the track connecting Sikanderpur to Sector 55 and 56.

Rapid Metro (Gurgaon) Managing Director and CEO, IL&FS Rail Ltd, Rajiv Banga, said: “The work on South Extension is in full swing. Three trains have arrived and our teams are committed to commence operations as per schedule.” The construction for the Rapid Metro Phase-II is expected to be end by September 2016. Phase-II of the project is expected to boost the ridership of the private metro network. Currently, the ridership stands at a little over 30,000.

Also, Phase-II will add seven kilometres of double track stretching south of Sikanderpur station along the Golf Course Road, with five new stations. It will take 18 minutes to travel the entire route.

The expansion to the south of Gurgaon will increase the reach of the Rapid Metro and further make inroads into offering a safe and convenient option to commute. Due to increase in pollution levels and traffic congestion, it is time for people to switch to a sustainable mode of transport, said Mr. Banga.

The Rapid Metro officials are now waiting for the Haryana government to finalise the alignment for metro connectivity between Dwarka and Gurgaon to plan Phase-III of the network, which will connect the current 5.1-km stretch in Cyber City to Udyog Vihar.
