Prompt action by the Delhi Police helped save the life of a 26-year-old who fell unconscious following a heart attack while exiting Chandni Chowk metro station on Wednesday.

Baghpat resident Nitin Kumar, a sales executive with a private company, allegedly fell on the stairs outside the station in the afternoon. The police control room received a call at 4.48 p.m. from a CISF officer deployed at the station.

“The officer claimed that the ambulance they had called had not yet reached the metro station but Mr. Kumar was in need of urgent medical attention,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Devendra Arya.

He said Assistant Sub-Inspector Bhoop Singh and van driver Assistant Sub-Inspector Satya Prakash swung into action immediately. Mr. Singh performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Mr. Kumar on the way to the hospital, following which he regained consciousness.

“The doctors commended the quick thinking by the policemen. Mr. Kumar’s family was also informed,” Mr. Arya said.

He said the PCR staff is continuously sensitised on how basic medical training like giving CPR to an injured or ill person during the ‘golden hour’ can save a life.

“We keep organising health talks and workshops for the PCR staff to learn the symptoms of different medical emergency situations and the possible remedies,” he added.

Regular workshops

Doctors and experts conduct workshops to educate policemen on how to deal with victims of accidents, persons who are choking or suffering from head, spine and limb injuries. Around 200 personnel deployed with the PCR unit recently attended one such workshop.
