Prisoner murdered by inmates in Rohini jail

The accused had attacked the victim using a sharp object that they had shaped using the metal strap of a tubelight fixed inside their cell.

A 39-year-old undertrial lodged at Rohini Jail in Outer Delhi was allegedly murdered by three fellow prisoners on Friday evening.

According to police, the victim, identified as Rajvinder, was attacked by Aashu, Amit and Manpreet around 5-30 p.m. in ward no. 6 of the prison complex.

The accused had reportedly entered the victim’s cell on the pretext of looking for a waste cloth to clean their cell. On entering, they struck a conversation with him. Then suddenly Amit and Aashu grabbed him, while Manpreet attacked him with the sharp object.

Prison sources said by the time the jail staff could come to Rajvinder’s rescue, the trio had severely injured him. He was rushed to LNJP Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 5-30 a.m. on Saturday. Rajvinder, a resident of Swaroop Nagar, was an accused in an attempt-to-murder case that took place in Jahangirpuri and was brought to the jail on April 16 this year, prison authorities said. A case of murder has been registered against the accused trio at the Samaipur Badli police station and a magisterial inquiry has also been initiated in this matter.

“Rajvinder was a witness in a murder case in which Manpreet was an accused. It could be a reason why the trio attacked him with an intention to kill,” said a police officer.

“It would be too early to comment on this matter as an inquest is under way by a Metropolitan Magistrate,” said Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta.
