Power demand rises, likely to touch 6,100 MW in mid-June

‘Growth in demand is lower than anticipated demand this season’

With the mercury rising in the Capital, the demand for power has also risen. While the city recorded a maximum of 41 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was two degrees higher than Monday, the power demand increased to 4,121 MW – higher by 31 MW compared to Monday.

Delhi met the peak load of 4,090 MW on Monday. Power department officials said the Capital is anticipating a peak demand of 6,100 MW.

“The peak demand is likely to hit 6,100 MW in the first fortnight of June during this summer. The discoms have made adequate arrangements to meet the anticipated peak load demand. Though there will be sufficient power, people should use electrical appliances, particularly air-conditioners, judiciously,” said Arun Goyal, principal secretary (Power).

Officials said the growth in demand is marginally lower than the anticipated demand and in line with the projection for the season.

“The peak demand anticipated for the month of April was 4,200 MW. At the time of peak demand on April 28, power generation within Delhi was 649 MW and drawl from the central sector stations (including bilateral arrangements) was 3,441 MW,” said an official.

While officials claimed they are meeting the power demand, load shedding was reported from different parts of the city on Thursday.

“Power tripped in two phases during the night, once during midnight for around an hour. It went off again early morning for around an hour and a half,” said Satish Kumar, a resident of Ram Dutt Enclave in Uttam Nagar.
