An injured peacock was rescued from the Lutyens’ Delhi residence of Union Minister of Minority Affairs Najma Heptullah on Saturday.
Animal rescue organisation Wildlife SOS got a call on its helpline by a member of the Minister’s household staf.
A rapid response unit was then sent to the location.

B.B. Sunar, the caretaker who called the helpline, said he found the peacock sitting on a tree.
“After a while it flew down to the lawn. That is when I noticed that the bird’s left leg was bleeding. It was then that I contacted the helpline,” said Mr. Sunar. Apart from the leg injury, the bird had minor wounds on its beak and neck.
The Wildlife SOS team has now transferred the bird to its rescue facility in Gurgaon, where it is undergoing treatment.

“We will try to place the bird back to the same area that we found it in, as peacocks are territorial birds,” said Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS.
Geeta Seshamani, who is also co-founder of Wildlife SOS, said that Delhi still had a few patches of forest that were home to wildlife.
She added that it is important for humans to be sensitive towards the wild animals in the city.
Ms. Seshamani added that the use of pesticides was harming birds that eat insects.
