Police probing role of 16-year-old victim’s male friend

A few days after a teenager was gang-raped by three men in Shalimar Bagh’s Sheesh Mahal Park, the Delhi Police on Tuesday rounded up nearly 100 snatchers and persons with criminal records from the area.

An officer said nearby police stations have received details of the men who were nabbed. They added that 50 more persons with criminal records are likely to be detained later for questioning.

“We suspect the accused are from nearby areas. So far, we have not been able to narrow down the list. The phones of the 16-year-old victim and her male friend have not been recovered either. She claims the accused snatched her phone and threw it. The boy’s phone was also snatched,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west) Aslam Khan.

“Her friend’s role in the incident is being probed as he has been changing his version of events frequently. He had earlier told the police that he fell unconscious during the rape. It has emerged now that he had met a few acquaintances in the park. He also claimed to have looked for the girl after regaining consciousness,” Mr. Khan said.

“We suspect that he knows the accused and the girl was unaware of this,” he said.
