Govt.’s Services Dept. issues order

The Delhi government’s Services Department has issued directions for the implementation of 10% reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS) in all direct recruitment effective from February 1 this year.

In the run-up to the Lok Sabha election, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had cleared 10% quota in education and government jobs for the EWS.

In a circular dated May 28, issued by Deputy Secretary (Services) Biju Raj on behalf of the competent authority that is the Lieutenant-Governor, all the departments and other bodies of the Delhi government have been asked to comply.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had supported the 10% reservation to EWS after the BJP-led Centre announced it in January and sought a constitutional amendment for its implementation.

He had asked the Centre to extend the Parliament session for passing a Constitutional Amendment Bill in this regard stating that AAP would support it.

The office of L-G presently exercises jurisdiction over the Services Department as the dispute between Raj Niwas and the elected AAP government, who has jurisdiction over services in Delhi, is sub-judice.
