Five students of Jamia Millia Islamia on Saturday were served show cause notice by the university administration for participating in a protest on the campus on October 5.

They were protesting against the event “Global Health Zenith: Confluence ‘19”, organised by the Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics that was carried out in collaboration with Israel as a country partner.

Two students affiliated to the AISA and three others were sent notice by the Proctor of the university.

The students said that they were carrying out a peaceful protest to express their “disassociation with the invitation to Israel on the campus as they believe that Israel is committing large-scale human rights violation in Palestine.”

“We have been seeing that Modi government is criminalising dissent across the country and in educational institutions. This show cause notice is one such attempt to stifle the voices of students in Jamia,” AISA said in a statement.

In the notice, the Jamia administration said that it recognises that the students have a right to dissent but alleges that the students did not bring to the knowledge of Jamia authorities the reason for their protest. It accuses them of breaking the lock of the main gate and intimidating security guards deployed there. It said that although the students were called for a discussion with the Proctor on the issue, they hurled abuses instead.
