Councillors of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation have expressed concern over the alleged stranglehold of the “parking mafia” on parking spaces. Cutting across party lines several councillors highlighted “irregularities” in the functioning of the parking lots in areas under the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and demanded action against the mafia.
Some of them even went to the extent of talking about the possibility of councillors and corporation officials being a part of the “parking mafia”, alleging huge loss of revenue to the corporation.
Standing Commitee Chairman Ram Kishan Singhal said there was no check over illegal parking as a mere five to six operators were running all the parking sites. He said during his inspection he found that none of the measures demanded by the House – such as clearly displaying on boards the parking rates, attendants wearing uniforms and provision of proper tickets – was being followed.

Leader of the House Mahendra Nagpal came down heavily on corporation officials for not taking the menace seriously. Criticising them for providing “incomplete” information in response to the short notice issued in the House, he said: “The policy for improving parking sites is not being implemented. The officials are not serious on the matter. What is the purpose of asking questions in the House if no one answers them properly?”
