The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to award tenders for the laying of pipelines that will supply treated sewage water for gardening purposes in a South Delhi colony.

Directing the authorities to complete the process by November 15, a Bench headed by NGT judicial member Raghuvendra S. Rathore said that a fine of ₹10,000 each would be imposed on the authorities in case of non-compliance of orders.

The Bench further directed DDA and the civic body to submit a report on the completion of work on November 16, after it was informed that the tenders had been floated and once finalised, the pipeline on the approximately 6-km stretch would be laid down.

The directions came while the green panel was hearing a plea filed by a Delhi resident who had sought directions for supply of treated sewage water in the Vasant Kunj area for gardening purposes.

Earlier, the green Bench had directed authorities to file an action taken report on making the pipeline operational. The tribunal had also asked residents, DDA, SDMC and other authorities not to use fresh water for gardening purposes.
