A 21-year-old woman who was allegedly tortured by her husband and in-laws committed suicide on Friday, barely a month after her marriage. All three have been arrested, the police said. Aruna and Pradeep, a resident of Bhagat Singh Park in Samaypur Badli, got married on October 31.
“The police received a call around 9 a.m. A team reached the spot and found her hanging,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta.
“Her body has been sent for post-mortem. The trio have been arrested and an enquiry by the Magistrate initiated,” he said. Aruna’s family reportedly told the police that she was tortured by her husband and in-laws.

“Pradeep and his family had expected a motorbike and cash as dowry. Since her family could not afford the bike or the cash, they troubled her,” said a senior police officer.
Fight between families
Stating that Aruna’s family had met her husband and in-laws recently, the officer said an argument between them turned into a fight.

“Pradeep allegedly broke things and told the family that he will kill everyone,” the officer said.
Based on her family’s complaint, the police have registered a case under Sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 304B (where the death of a woman is caused by any burns or bodily injury or occurs otherwise than under normal circumstances within seven years of her marriage) of the Indian Penal Code.
