New multi-level parking lot for the Capital

Published - February 16, 2012 11:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A multi-level underground parking was inaugurated by Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi at the Parade Ground on Subhas Marg on Wednesday. The parking lot has a capacity for 1,020 cars and has been constructed in two years at a cost of Rs.52.83 crore.

The project was taken up in March 2010. The three-level underground parking will cater to the parking of about 720 cars, while the surface will be utilised for parking of 300 cars in the busy area of the Walled City.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Abbi said: “A parking lot in the Walled City was a long-pending demand of the residents of the area. The old city is famous among tourists and the area being a commercial hub leads to movement of large number of vehicles. However, the scant space for parking was worrisome and therefore the need arose to go for multi-level underground parking.”

She said the parking would benefit for tourists, traders and others visiting historical Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid and Red Fort. Pointing out that nearly 1,000 new vehicles are added on a daily basis on the city roads, she said the problem of parking is going to be a major cause of concern in major cities such as Delhi. The Mayor added that as many as five more parking projects executed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi are scheduled to be completed by March.

Engineer-in-Chief of the project Ravi Dass said the parking has been designed for “optimum space utilisation and considering safety measures with regard to earthquake and other natural calamities”. All fire safety measures and efficient ventilation system have also been provided.
