‘Need smart citizens, not smart cities’

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that Indians must have the confidence in themselves that they can build world-class educational institutions and that his government will provide all the resources required to build such establishments.

The CM was speaking at the inauguration of the new Delhi Technological University (DTU) campus in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar.

He added that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government gives value to education and health as the country “needs smart citizens, not smart cities or parks”.

For business studies

Mr. Kejriwal asked the new institute to draw up a blueprint, within a month, that will make it among the top 10 institutes in the world.

“We will not need to go to America any more to gain access to the best education if we have the confidence in ourselves to make DTU a great institute,” he said.

The CM also asked the university to nurture about 50% of its students as entrepreneurs.

“This year, around 300 students have taken admission in undergraduate (BBA) and post graduate (MBA) management programs. The intake will further increase by 300 students next year when DTU introduces four more management programs,” Mr. Kejriwal said.

If 30%-40% of the students become entrepreneurs and offer jobs to Delhi’s unemployed youth, our mission will be accomplished. DTU must develop the entrepreneurial spirit among students so that they can create more jobs,” He added.

The Vivek Vihar campus will offer only management and business studies.

The campus was set in just two months, after Shaheed Sukdev College of Business Studies shifted to a new building in Rohini.

The courses being offered on DTU east Delhi Campus are: BBA, B.A. (Hons.) Economics and MBA.

The total number of seats in the starting year is 300 — 60 seats for MBA, and 120 each for BBA and B.A. (Hons.) Economics 120. Classes begin on Monday.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia also announced that another engineering campus of DTU will come up at ITI Khichdipur campus.

DTU was formerly called the Delhi College of Engineering and is the mother institution of a number of national projects including IITD, SPA, College of Arts and FMS. DTU’s main campus is spread over 164 acres in Rohini
