The victim had taken the cab from Mahipalpur in Delhi for Gurgaon when the incident took place.

In yet another attack on people from the Northeast, a young woman from Nagaland was allegedly molested by a cab driver on Sunday night.

The victim had taken the cab from Mahipalpur in Delhi for Gurgaon when the incident took place.

The incident comes close on the heels of a similar case wherein two teenaged girls from Northeast were allegedly molested by a security guard inside an elevator in South City-I this past week.

The 21-year-old victim, who works as a salesgirl at a shopping mall in South Delhi, boarded the cab around 8-30 p.m. at Mahipalpur traffic signal on her way back home as she could not get any other transport even after a long wait.

“I reached Mahipalpur in an auto-rickshaw and waited for a long time for a public transport to Gurgaon. Some people standing behind me were drunk. So I got scared and took this cab in a hurry,” said the woman.

Soon after she got into the cab, the driver asked her to come to the front seat on the pretext of taking more passengers and tried to befriend her.

“He introduced himself as Manoj Yadav and told me that he owns a tour and travel agency. He tried to shake hands with me and touch me on the pretext of tying my seat belt. On reaching the Rajokri flyover, he locked the car. When we neared the Ambience Mall, I asked him to stop but he accelerated. At this point the phone inside my bag started ringing. When I tried to reach for it, he pulled my bag with both hands. Seizing the opportunity, I unlocked the car and jumped out,” said the woman.

Some passers-by then took her to a hospital. She had suffered injuries on her neck and head.

The victim told the police that the accused took away the bag which contained her purse and mobile phone.

A case has been registered in Gurgaon in this connection.

“Though the incident had originated in Delhi, we registered a case in Gurgaon to spare her the ordeal of running around to file the complaint. We sent a police officer to her house to take her complaint. A search has been launched for the accused,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Nazneen Bhasin.

The woman also informed the Northeast Support Centre and Helpline about the incident. NESC and Helpline media-in-charge Bruce K. Thangkhal said people from the Northeast were being attacked frequently and they were concerned about their safety and security.
