The dispute between the Delhi and Haryana Governments over Munak Canal, which can add 80 million gallons per day (MGD) to Delhi’s water supply, will be resolved soon, two senior Union Ministers have said.
Resolving the Munak Canal dispute with the Haryana Government was at the top of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s agenda for the water sector when he presented the Delhi Budget on Friday. The pucca canal, which has been pending for years, will benefit 35 lakh residents in South, South-West, West and North-West Delhi.
Also on Friday while inaugurating a new underground reservoir in Kirari, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari assured the Delhi Jal Board officials that the dispute would be resolved soon. However, a senior Haryana Government official said: “As far as we are concerned, Munak is not an issue. It is a problem for Delhi, created by Delhi.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Jaitley’s Budget speech focused on increasing water supply, which hasn’t been done in years, and stopping sewage from flowing into the Yamuna.
A total of Rs.2,000 crore was allotted as plan outlay for the water and sewerage sectors in the Capital.
