Multi-crore heist gets murkier with more revelations

With several accused held in connection with the dramatic multi-crore heist in Lajpat Nagar last week, sources from the Delhi Police on Sunday said they were now probing the veracity of some claims made by the complainant, including the exact amount stolen.

New facts emerge

A source said that in the light of new facts that have emerged during the ongoing probe, they have found contradictions in the versions of Rajesh Kalra and Rakesh Kumar Sharma, who owned the money.

“We are now trying to ascertain if the amount stolen was just Rs 4.69 crore as new revelations have made it clear that Rs 2.89 crore was not kept in the Honda City that was driven away by the accused. It was stuffed in another tailing Hyundai i-20 car. However, in the police complaint made by Mr. Sharma, he told us the entire amount Rs. 7.70 crore was kept in the Honda City,” said the source from the South-East district police.

The Delhi Police Special Cell, which have made three arrests and apprehended the juvenile mastermind so far, refused to share details on the recovered cash.

Robbery on route to GK

According to the police statement of Mr. Sharma, he left Kalkaji in the Honda City along with his employees Baijnath, driver Subodh and the juvenile employee of Mr. Kalra to meet the diamond businessman at his Greater Kailash residence.

According to the new disclosure, Mr. Kalra’s employees, Sandeep, Brijesh and Rajesh Mishra, had put five bags containing Rs. 4.69 crore in the storage space of Honda City while at his residence.

Two other bags containing Rs 2.89 crore were put in Hyundai i-20 car.

Then they left for Karol Bagh, but were robbed near Moolchand flyover. The robbers made away with the entire cash in the Honda City, which they later abandoned near Kotla Mubarakpur.

False statement?

When the police reached the spot, the source said, they found Mr. Sharma coming in the i-20 car.

They are now probing if Rakesh Kumar Sharma left Rs. 2.89 crore at the house of one of his acquaintances in Greater Kailash before reaching the spot, and instead reported a heist of Rs 7.70 crore in the Fisrt Information Report, said the source.
