More than 16,000 vehicle owners were challaned by the Gurgaon Police on Zero Tolerance Day on Thursday. Aimed at ensuring enforcement of traffic rules, the drive was initiated for the third time in the city.
The traffic violators were issued challans for various offences such as illegal parking; wrong side driving; driving without licence, pollution control certificate and insurance; not wearing seat belt; not wearing helmet and using mobile phone while driving.
Twenty four teams were deployed across the city for the drive that started at 8 a.m. and continued till late in the evening. The zone-wise break-up of challans is as follows: East Zone (4,312), West Zone (4,964), Highway Zone (3,265) and South Zone (1,468). The highest number of challans were issued for using mobile phone while driving (2,714), followed by not wearing seat belt (2,197), wrong parking (1,618), wrong side driving (1,263) and traffic light jump (610).

Besides, 3,357 auto-rickshaws were also challaned for various offences. While the district police issued 2,016 challans, the traffic police issued 14,009 challans taking the total number of challans to 16,025. “No one was exempted from the fines and even government officials were issued challans for breaking traffic rules,” said Gurgaon Police spokesperson Hawa Singh.
