Minor girl, factory worker found hanging from tree in Kamla Nehru Park

A factory worker and a minor girl were found hanging from a tree at Kamla Nehru Park in North Delhi on Sunday.  According to the police, the victims were allegedly in a relationship and were distressed that their families were against their marriage.

The man, identified as 21-year-old Roshan alias Suraj, worked as a labourer in a factory in the Wazirpur Industrial Area. The girl was aged between 13 and 14 years. A police officer said she was a school student.

“A Delhi Police constable Raghuraj, who was on patrol duty in the area, spotted the bodies. Both Roshan and the girl had used

dupattas to hang themselves from the same branch of the tree. Raghuraj then made a call to the police control room and a team was despatched to the spot,” said a police officer.

No suicide note was found at the spot. But preliminary investigations revealed their displeasure over their families’ opposition to their relationship and marriage. Both were residents of Bharat Nagar where the boy’s father sells vegetables while the girl’s works at a shop. The police said they were probing whether the age gap between the boy and girl or any other issue was at the root of the families’ stand on the issue of marriage.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, which will establish the timing of the deaths. The police have so far ruled out foul play. They suspect that the two could have committed suicide on Saturday night.

The double suicide and the circumstances under which it was committed is very similar to another such incident at the same park last year.

In early 2013, a couple in its Twenties had consumed sleeping pills, heartbroken over the fact that their families were against their marriage.
