Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under the Ministry of Power, on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram to install LED streetlights under the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP).
Gurugram is the first city in Haryana to implement the project, which is in line with the Smart Cities initiative of the State government. Though the project has a deadline of January 26 next year, it is expected to be completed by this year end.
At present, the streetlighting system prevailing in MCG consists of conventional lights such as high pressure sodium vapour lamps, metal halide lamps and fluorescent tubelights.

Power savings
EESL will be implementing the Centralised Control and Monitoring System with the replacement of existing conventional streetlight fixtures besides providing minimum guarantee of power savings of 45-55% to the MCG.
According to the agreement, EESL will replace over 48,568 conventional streetlights with LED lights, which would help the MCG save approximately 13 million units of electricity annually.

The entire upfront capital cost of upgradation of conventional streetlight fixtures to LED streetlight fixtures will be borne by the MCG while EESL will carry out annual maintenance and warranty replacement on behalf of the civic body for a period of 10 years.
Saurabh Kumar, managing director, EESL said: “The Millennium City of Gurugram takes a step ahead to become a smart city with this agreement today [Tuesday]. The fact that SLNP is now being implemented by two municipalities in India’s largest urban agglomeration — Delhi NCR — reinforces our belief that India is taking rapid strides to be a world leader in energy efficiency.”
