A 23-year-old man was abducted, strangulated and robbed of ₹4.5 lakh in south-east Delhi’s Jaitpur on Monday, the police said on Wednesday. Five persons, including a close friend of the victim, have been arrested, the police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal said Shivam (20), Sumit (19), Heeralal (27), Kishan (19) and Mukeem (20) have been arrested for allegedly killing Deepak, the son of a dairy farm owner, and dumping his body in a canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Khair-Aligarh. Deepak’s father told investigators on Monday evening that his son had been missing since 2 p.m.
“He said that he had gone to deposit ₹4.5 lakh to a bank with a few friends and did not return, adding that the friends had returned,” Mr. Biswal said, adding that the father had mentioned Shivam’s name.

The police then apprehended Shivam after conducting raids and interrogated him at length. He allegedly confessed to abducting Deepak and strangulating him along with his accomplices.
The other four accused were arrested at Shivam’s instance.
The police was told that Shivam was aware that Deepak used to go to the bank to deposit money on a regular basis, and planned to rob him of the money.

“He [Shivam] asked Deepak to go for a movie, but the latter denied saying he had to go the bank. Shivam then asked him to come for the movie after depositing the money,” Mr. Biswal said.
On the way to the bank, the accused strangulated Deepak in a car and dumped his body into a canal, the police said, adding that they also threw his mobile phone near Kalindi Kunj metro station to mislead the police. The police also said that they have recovered the string, which the accused used for strangulation, the car used in the commission of the crime, deceased’s mobile phone and the robbed booty.
